Reenergising a handbook to enhance action balancing nature conservation and transportation

¿Por qué asistir a esta sesión?
Alliances between environment and transportation sectors are helping to reduce biodiversity loss associated with linear infrastructure development. Thousands of wildlife crossings have already been constructed and this session will present how we are hoping to progress new action by an innovative process of cooperation and sharing good practice.

“I don’t want to create barriers across the landscape, cause wildlife mortality or foster alien invasive species, but what can I do to avoid it?”. This is the question facing an engineer with the challenge of developing or upgrading a road or railway. The ‘Wildlife and Traffic’ handbook, drafted 20 years ago, was born to provide answers to this question and reference solutions in order to harmonise nature and the growing need for infrastructure. Compiling evidence-based knowledge and providing guidelines ‘ready to be applied’ on infrastructure design, construction and operation catalysed the construction of innovative wildlife passages. These crossings are key components of the European green infrastructure and inspire similar actions worldwide. In this session we will share our vision on how updating these pioneering guidelines via a cooperative process and providing digital solutions, will further improve practice and ultimately contribute to changing the trend of biodiversity loss.
