Africa’s Protected Natural Assets: Values of Protected Areas in Africa for Prosperous and Resilient Societies – Report presentation and discussion: What does it mean for practice?

¿Por qué asistir a esta sesión?
Did you know that 30% of all Africans live in close neighbourhood to a conservation area? The recently launched Africa’s Protected Natural Assets report presents new evidence of the societal importance of conservation areas. It develops an expanded vision for conservation areas that we will discuss during this event.
HideDescripción
In this event, we will discuss the findings of the Africa’s Protected Natural Assets report, a first of its kind comprehensive assessment of the societal importance of conservation areas in Africa. It shows the interdependencies between conservation areas and African societies, e.g: 30% of all Africans live in close neighbourhood to a conservation area and 1240 African cities benefit from conservation areas. It presents evidence that conservation areas are safeguards for food, water and energy security and for other societal and development priorities. Based on a vast body of evidence, the report proposes a new conservation vision in which conservation evolves from an environmental to a sustainable development issue. The manifold implications for conservation area management and technical cooperation will be discussed.
